“It’s not who you are underneath, it’s what you do that defines you.” Remember this beautiful and meaningful quote from the movie “Batman Begins”? It so easily implies in the society we live in. We create an image of a person with our pre-conceived notions, even before knowing that person. And to prove that, Canon conducted an experiment. They asked six different portrait photographers to individually capture portrait of a man named Michael, anyway they had want. Professional photographers always bring out the best of you, in their portrait photographs, just like an artist.
However there was a twist. Each of the six photographers were told a different profession, story and past about Michael. They were told that Micheal was a self-made millionaire, someone who has saved someone’s life recently (so a hero), a fisherman, an ex-inmate, a self-proclaimed psychic, and a recovering alcoholic. Michael, who is an actor, did his best to portray those roles in front of his individual photographers. The results were amazing. We get to see different perspectives of portrait photography of a same man, each photograph telling a different story.
Please watch the video where these six photographers take on one man named Michael.
This is a reminder of the famous saying that “Do not judge a book by it’s cover”. What people say about someone, will shape your thoughts about that person, which can be wrong many a times and skew your judgement. You should listen to one’s story and make your own judgement. A man is always the best narrator of his own story. These six photographers, just proved the same. Here are the six different perspectives of portrait photographs of the same man:
This experiment was conducted by Canon Australia. As they say “A photograph is shaped more by the person behind the camera than by what’s in front of it.”.
